jeep rear end- no tag/ also leaking

There is no tag on my rear end and I am trying to determine which rear end I have. I have a slight roaring noise coming from the rear as well as My rear cover has just started leaking (at least I think it just started). How can I determine which ear end I have without going to a shop? Also, is it reasonable to think I may have a bigger problem than just replacing a axle cover gasket? I have oinly had this jeepp a few months and it has made a slight roaring since I got it.

Depending on which Jeep you have (you never mentioned which one), it's likely to be either an AMC, Dana, or Chrysler. If it's a Cherokee, it's probably a Chrysler 8.25, if it's a TJ, it's a Dana, CJ it's likely an AMC, etc.

My old MJ (Commanche Pick Up) had a Dana 35 in it that when the pinion bearing went sounded just like that. I wouldn't let it go too long or it'll leave you stranded.
