air conditioner blows cool air when at idle. But as soon as you step on gas the air stops coming through the air vents and I can hear the blower / fan working.

This is an easy one... There is a broken vacuum line somewhere under your hood... It will be near the fire wall and it will be hard plastic about 1/8"

What is happening is your blend door is opening when you floor it which causes the air to blow thru the defrost vent...

Fixing the vacuum line will fix your problem...
