Hey guys! Long time no post...

Alright, so here's whats going on. When I engage 4WD it slips right in no problem but as soon as I put any load on the drive train it sounds and feels like someone in banging the floor board with a sledge hammer. It's bad! I still have power to the front wheels but the banging is to unbearable to use it in 4X4. In 4Lo the banging is much more rapid which leads me to believe the problem is in the transfer case (NP231).

Any idea on what this might be. All the joints on the drive line are fine. Not loose at all.

Thanks in advance for any input.

The engine & tranny mounts are new.

And this wasn't a progressive problem. One day it was fine and the next it was bad. The clunking is consistent both foreword and backwards. and if I pull up to a curb in 4Lo and let the front wheels rest on it while the vehicle is idling in gear there's a chatter, rattling sound coming from the t-case region. The t-case has about 200K on it now.

Thanks again -

Tim

Been reading up on my issue.. It sounds to me like the chain is skipping.

Yes, it sounds like you might have a stretched chain. I would pull it apart and inspect it or just get a replacement.

Tim, I've had good luck with Transfercase Express out of Oakland Ca. and Spartanburg SC. They were easy to deal with, delievered when they said they would and the price for an HD TC was reasonable.
