Driving down the Interstate yesterday, just fine, suddenly it's like someone put the car in neutral. coasted to a stop, when i put in Park, there was a fine grinding, BUT car still wanted to roll down hill in park,
tried rev,d,3,2 etc, nothing.
also tried in 4wd, nothing.
when th etow truck got there, it was pulled about 3 or 4 feet while still in park before i put in neutral.
when unloaded , park worked fine, so i started it up, went into reverse and drive fine.
today it slipped some in first, changed to second, i stopped, drove more but with no slipping.
I'm thinking, or hoping filter stopped up, or maybe pump in trans.

i change the fluid and filter every year, except last year(6 months ago) just chnged the fluid.
daily driver, taken care off, never any problems, never any sipping in the trans.
its 96 cherokee, 4.0 auto trans with command trac.

anybody have any thoughts ideas or wisdom?

greatly appreciated!!!!!!

Mike

Park is all mechanical. No fluid involved. So if it did not stop even in park then something besides fluid, pump nor clutches could be the cause.

changed tranny fluis and filter, changed transfer case fluid

i have moevement now, but its like its in between 2 and 4 wheel drive
also if i switch to th 4x4 Neutral, it doesnt do anything, and the selector will physically not go into 4 low

can the transfer case be stuck in between gears and effect the transmission????

thanks

I BELIVE THAT ON THE REAR OF AN AUTO TRANS THAT THEIR IS A
GIZMO THAT LOOKS LIKE A MEDIUM SIZED FUEL FILTER, ITS CALLED
A VACUME MODULATOR, IT CONTROLS ALL THE SHIFTING IN YOUR
TRANSMISSION, IT SHOULD HAVE A VACUME HOSE GOING TO IT..
MAKE SURE THE HOSE ISNT CRACKED OR SPLIT AND ITS GETTING
NO VACUME OR LOW VACUME BECAUSE OF THAT, ALSO THE MODULATORS
THEMSELVES GO BAD ON OCCASION AND JUST QUIT WORKING, THEY
DONT COST BUT LIKE $25 BUT CAN CAUSE THESE PROBLEMS.

JUST AN IDEA TO TRY..

Absolutely. It resides between the trans and your axles. Sounds like a linkage issue to me...

Just thought I'd let you all know what happened, so if you run into the same situation in the future,

it was the shift fork inside the transfer case, so although the tranny was working fine, it was "in between" and since the fork was messed up, couldnt shift the case where it was supposed to be, could shift the lever, but no movement on the inside of the case.

BUT at that point in time i was completely green about transfer cases,
so i had it in the shop, and it cost 400 dollars, most being labor.

months later the T case almost did the same thing,
except this time i was in town, and not on the interstate, that saved me,
i could drive around town, but if i tried to over 35-40 mph then it was start to slip out of position,

so i learned that, simply replacing just the broken part in the case is not always the best thing, because it put stress on surrounding parts,

can get rebuild kit for about 150, and thats for a beefier than stock,

BUT since i had not rebuilt one myself, and for me to buy all the parts for a really heavy duty one was only about 200 - 300 difference,
i just bought one from monster transmission for 700 free shipping,
and it has a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty.

just got it in today, this weekend, i'm hittin' the trails
