I have a 96' XJ and one thing i know to avoid is the 2.5 I4.
i would try to find a 4.0I6. i have 170,000 miles on mine and it still runs like its new.
im hard on my vehicle too.
i go muddin alot with my buddies pull thier trucks out when they get stuck.
i pulled a car trailer with a 96' lumina which is not the lightest car and had no problem with that

If buying an older Cherokee (or some newer ones!) be sure to check the underbody for rust. If you want power, steer clear of the 2.5L I-4 and the 2.8L V6. The V6 will also come with the Peugeot manual tranny, also a load of poop.

Musty smells which usually means water leaking into cabin. Rust right near where the front tires throw water. Also axle u-joints. Cheap to fix but time consuming.
