Phantom....

In previous threads you've said that you wouldn't buy a rack that mounts to factory cross bars.. (I think) yours mounts to the factory rails though... right?? I have a '99 XJ... they shortened the rails that year to 50" ... Do you think it'd be easy enough to mount some pre-'99 rails so I can get a longer rack?? Seems simple enough, but I always like to check with those of you w/ more experience.

Anyone else too??

The side rails are held down with screws. So to put longer rails on, you would need to drill some holes in the roof and make sure everything is watertight after the new (longer) rails are on.

Another option is to get a rack that mounts to the rain gutters instead of the existing rails.

I just bought a longer rack... came off of a '94. Mounting to the rain gutter seems more stable though. What's your opinion? Also, if I mount the longer rails, how would you suggest I attach it? I mean, I know with screws, but should I maybe put some RTV on the rails as well to keep it water tight?

I HAVEN'T DONE THE EXACT PROJECT YOUR TALKING ABOUT BUT I BEEFED UP MY STOCK RACK BECAUSE IT WAS REALLY LOOSE. I BACKED OUT ALL OF THE SCREWS AND REPLACED THEM WITH HEAVY DUTY RIVETS. BEFORE THE APPLICATION I SEALED ALL OF THE HOLES WITH A MARINE SEALANT(COMES IN A CAULKING TUBE @ HOME DEPOT/$10). WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO DO IS GET THE RIVET HOLES LINED UP AND CAREFULLY DRILL ANY NEW HOLES THAT YOU'LL NEED AND THEN CAULK, APPLY RIVETS FROM ONE END MOVING TOWARDS THE OTHER. YOU CAN GET A KIT TO MOUNT FROM THE GUTTERS BUT I DONT THINK IT LOOKS AS "CLEAN"...ANYWAY, HOPE THIS HELPS!

Thanks Fly.. I'll take your advice for at least part of it. I'm not sure if the existing holes on my '99 will match up with the holes on the long rails from the '94, if they do, I'll use the existing screws and holes then rivet the front end.
