I currently own a 02 GCL 4.0 and it appears as though I have some coolant spash in the front under carrige even some fluid on the power steering box. I found some of the splash to be oddly placed but who knows, thats the physics of turbulance and fuilds going on down there. Yesterday my heat decided it's not going to work. Initially there was some sparse heat output but it was intermittant and would come on briefly then go back to cool air until finally no more heat at all.

I'm not familiar with the dependencies between the heating system and and water pump but would a failing water pump possibly be the cause of the heat issue? If I was fortunate enough to notice it on its dieing day with the impeller spinning its last wheel would that also explain the on and off bursts of heat encountered prior to failure?

I havent had a chance to see if the leakage source is coming from the weep hole and it is winter now so the likelyhood of tell tale overheating probably wont occur. I don't belive the fluid on the steering box to be power steering fluid and I have not encountered any steering issues nor has the steering fluid resevour emptied out. And just to note also, I have within the last month or 2 had to top off my radiator tank when I had a low coolant warning come on.

Any thoughts?

I'd try to figure out where it's coming from - pressure test it to see where the leak is for starters. I'm not familiar with the heating/ac system on a Grand Cherokee, but I'd probably start by following the heater hoses to the heater core to make sure they're not leaking.

There were no leaks along the heater hoses, but I guess I'm just hoping that the 2 systems are linked if it is in fact the water pump. I'd like to narrow this down to 1 problem because if they are in fact 2 separate systems then I will have bigger woes than already imagined.

Can anyone confirm or deny whether or not the heating system is dependent upon the water pump?

Yeah

Heater core has antifreeze/coolant running through it (where the heat comes from).

If you are low on coolant you'll have little heat.
