I'm sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find an answer when I searched, so: How easy is it to put rear speakers in a '97 Cherokee SE (that doesn't have them)? Is the wiring already there, so all you have to do is take apart the tailgate and install?

Thanks for any and all replies.

I have a '97 SE...it has speakers in the soundbar in the roof, unless yours is different. Post some pics maybe? If it doesn't have a soundbar I don't know where else they could be.

Doesn't have a soundbar. There's no evidence of any speakers anywhere. I'm just wondering how big a job this would be. I seem to recall in my '84 Cherokee that the wiring was there in the tailgate, and I just added them in there.

My '93 had no speakers in the back. I popped the plastic trim off and the wiring was already there.

'97+ XJ's have the rear speakers in the roof, as opposed to Pre-'97's, which have them in the tailgate. The wiring might be there, but the headliner is molded to the speakers, facing them a lil' bit forward. This is my '98:

For my '97, the speaker bar is detachable. If you can find a bar, and some speakers, and the wiring is all there it shouldn't be too hard to install.

Speakers come in three ways
Front speakers only AM/FM Front door speakers only
Front Door speakers and gate speakers AM/FM/Cassette
Premium Sound Front door speakers and gate speakers and dash speakers
In 1990 Jeep offered a sound bar that bolted in the roof which was later
incorporated into the headliner.
Door, gate and sound bar are 5 1/4 inch speaker
Dash is a 1 inch tweeter
Premium sound was Jensen Accusound
The sound bar was add on accesory purchased at the dealer.
It was discontinued in or around 1998.
The sound bar is made of fiber glass and can be found in salvage yards
for about $50.00. Most of them must be reclothed and new speakers installed. The sound bar can handle 6 inch speakers.
I have done this to four XJs in last 2 years.
Sound bar $50.00
Recloth $45.00
Speakers $40.00 to $50.00
Total $145.00 priceless
The wiring for the sound bar is behind the spare tire mount and jumps
off the gate speakers.
So if the XJ did not come with gate speakers you may have to run some wiring.
