I posted this on the YJ, section, but maybe this is the better place for it.

can you replace shocks individually, or do you have to replace all 4 at one time?

Also, replacing shocks on a stock setup, would you consider the $20 shocks or are they total crap?

If they are crap, what shock would you recommend for someone without a lot of money to spare?

One last thing, would replacing the shocks or the leaf springs make more of an improvement in the ride?

I'd strongly recommend doing them in pairs...front pair, back pair...if all 4 at one time is out of the question.

Shocks are one of those things where you get what you pay for. Cheap shocks usually provide a crappy ride and beat up your kidneys.

That one I can't answer as I'm not familiar with what's available or what's good for YJs. I like the OME shocks for my TJs...those might be something to investigate for your application.

When I said individually, I meant the front first and the rear in a week or two. If I do them myself, they are probably possible for me to do the low end monroes for in the range of $75 for parts. All four at a repair shop ain't happening right now as I just paid the repair shop $200 to replace my starter as I did not have time to do it myself.

As for the beating the kidneys out, my current shocks have beat them to the punch, no pun intended.
