I just bought a 1980 CJ 5, 4Cyl, 3 speed. Soft top with doors, warn winch, gas cans, etc. NO RUST, 70,000 miles California smog legal. Before I purchased I tried searching for this particular set-up and found nothing to compare it with price wise. I paid 3,800.00.
I did some research and found the 3 speed is a good unit, the 4 cyl. is GM not AMC. Therefore it's a pretty decent unit. Anyway it appears to be an O.K. buy so why can't find anything out there? Where there just only a few of these built?
I would like to keep it original although I was told there are some weak links in the axles, leaf spring hangers, somthing about the steering box support and some other bits and pieces.

I very much appreciate any opinions, or suggestions on this model.
Thanks,
Chris

Don't know how many were built. The 4 cyl isn't/wasn't a very popular version against the 6 cyl. And at that time (if I recall) there was the option of the CJ7, too. That's a little higher $$ than most might go for equipted the same. But the low miles help with that I'm sure.

Indeed there are some weak things about them, but then again what doesn't have some flaws? Rolling Eyes With the 4 cylinder and mostly stock, I'm guessing you will not have very many problems unless you start wheelin' it hard.

So post up some pics when you get chance. And congrats' on the purchase. Wink
