I checked my mileage by total miles and gallons used compared to the computer, the computer said I was getting 18.8 mpg and the calculated number was 15.8! Is this common, are they generally that far off?
The first two times I checked it was off also but not as much, maybe 1.5 or 2 gallons and I thought it was because I warmed it up and let it idle that could of caused it, this time no warm up at all and it is 3 mpg off and I thought I was on the right track getting 18.8, over half highway driving. I have the straight six with 161,000 miles, shouldn't I better getting a little better than 15.8 with 75% highway driving? Could it be I need new tires since mine are not that great? Thanks for any input.

Computer gives you average.. Which calculates your idle time. (Like down hills when you may be getting 99 MPG cause your coasting.. )

Its not that big a deal..

Did you calculate by how many miles you drove based on how many gallons it took you to refill?

yes, by the regular odometer and number of gallons to refill, I reset both the odometer and the computer at the same time at the previous refill, must be something with the gas reading to the computer that is not accurate?
