I just bought my 88 not even a month ago, and at this point it's just in the driveway as I have some issues to deal with before it's roadworthy(to pass inspection). So I go out to start it up while I work on. Except my ignition is locked into place. It has a minut amount of play in it(1/4" tops) but I can't any further. Anyone have a similar experience? What advice can you give me, I'm in a bind right now.

For reference I have an 88 XJ 5-speed 4.0L.

Thanks forum!

Welcome to the forum.

You could try spraying some wd-40 or something similar in the keyhole. Then move the key in and out to work in the lubricant. If that doesn't work you may need a new ignition lock cylinder.

Yeah...that didn't work. So, how do I go about replacing it?

I've had this problem in a few vehicles I've owned in the past. Don't know if this will help, but when you put the key in the ignition, grip the steering column and wiggle it back-and-forth to see if it turns. Sometimes the plastic casing on the steering column comes loose away from the wheel and causes the ignition port to lock up. The only real way to fix it is to tighten the screws that hold the column together, but that doesn't always last long.

yeah, even with a locked wheel, it still applies the same sometimes. just helped a coworker get hers goin this winter......that's all it was.
wheel was locked, but there's just enough play to free the ignition.

can you go into acc ? you could also try moving your gear shift a little bit .

most likely you will have to remove the cylinder and fix it or replace it
