The front U joints on my 96 cherokee has gone out and i droped the drive shaft and can't seem to get the old U joints out. Can you do that on your own or do you have to have some sort of press to get them out and put them back in?

When you say front U joints, do you mean the joints on your front axle shafts or the front of your main drive shaft? I replaced my front axle U joints last weekend. To get the old ones out, first remove the clips on the axle lobe holes. these are either on the outside or inside of the lobe. lie the shaft on the ground or table and place a socket that is big enough to go around the outer edge of the hole that the U joint sits in. Then place another socket on the other side that fits the diameter of the U joint end cap. Then use a large hammer to pound on the smaller socket so that it forces the u joint through the other side. if they have never been out, you might try using a torch to heat up the axle lobes. Hope this helps in some way!

If you hit the side of the shaft right where the u-joint cups are, it relieves the tension caused by forcing the cups through. I would do exactly what Xjcrawler mentioned, but after a couple whacks of the hammer on the socket, hit the side. I've found that it helps a lot to do this.
