My Speedometer and Odometer does not work, and i was told it was the Speed Sensor. I changed the Speed Sensor, and it wasnt the problem. I looked down into the shaft where the sensor goes into, and the gear thats turns the speed sensor gear is missing three or four teeth. Im assuming that is the problem, what is that part, where can i get that part, , and is it easy to change out?

The plastic gear is known as speedo gear you can find them from 4wheel parts and you can get it in different teeth patterns to adjust your speedo for different wheel sizes.

Are you saying the plastic gear is missing teeth or the gear inside that drives the plastic gear is missing teeth?

I have a 92 XJ with same problem. I have changed the Sensor, plastic gear looks ok but speedo jumps and it causes Cruise Control not to work.

Let me know if you are able to resolve your problem.

Yea, i found the part. Its called a Speedometer drive gear, its on the output shaft, off the transfer case. I ordered the part, and ill install it when it gets here, hopefully that'll fix the problem.

If you got it from the dealership (for once, it's a pretty reasonable price even from there dealership - usually around $15) I'd recommend you also buy the o-ring. They get knicked/tear pretty easily. Lube it up with ATF before you put it in. Wink
