Hello everyone,

I bought a 97 JGC Laredo 4.0 with the NV242 TC about a month ago. When I test drove it, I was able to put it in 4WD FT, although had to shift back and forth a few times between 2WD and 4WD FT. The ZJ has only 72000mi and in very good condition, probably never was off-road.

A few days ago I wanted to put it in 4WD FT, but it wouldn't engage: I can shift the lever into 4WD FT, but the indicator indicates 2WD(2 rear wheels light up, no FULL TIME indication). I tried it both when moving, when stopped and trans. in N, D, R, then moving again, let off the acc. pedal. 4WD FULL Time indicator won't light up no matter what.

First I thought it was just a problem with the 4WD switch in the TC. But tried to drive around with lever in 4WD FT, when making slow sharp turns, the car shakes (especially if I give it some gas). It seems to me the TC gets stuck in 4WD Part time. I can also shift the TC into N and 4WD low (with the trans in N and stopped), though it is hard to get it out of 4WD low.

I would appreciate any advice on how to troubleshoot the problem, your opinion what might cause this.

Thanks,

Csaba

If you put the transmission in R then N the t-case will shift in and out of 4L much easier. That's usually what I have to do. I don't have a 242 but it's the same concept. When you put it in R then N it takes the load off the T-case making it easier to shift and it will probably help with the other issues. Changing the fluid in the t-case may also help with the shifting issues if it's old fluid.

Thanks for the advice. I assume you have to come to a complete stop before putting the transmission into R. Do you back up a bit? When shifting the TC out of 4L (transmission in N) do you hold the brakes? I would guess letting the brakes off and/or letting the car coast slowly might help unload the center differential. I'll change the TC fluid as well. Thanks.
