a friend has a zj, was wondering if it is a common problem for the temperature gauge to not work. looking for any knowledge of this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. or if any 1 knows what wires to test to find the problem. thanks

Yes.. The temp sensor goes out .. Its not that big a deal.. The sensor on the V8 is near the distributor. Just pull it out and swap it..

There are two .. One has a single lead.. Thats for the gauge..

The other has two wire leads that is for the computer sensor that controls fuel mixture and such..

I'm not sure about 4.0 ZJs, but my 4.0 YJ had the guage lead at the rear of the engine, behind the rocker cover, up against the firewall. Shocked Gotta love Jeep engineering.

it was the same place on my xj too, good chance its the same on a zj, i could go check but its raining and i dont feel like it, hahaha
