this is probably a really dumb question, but what is the sensor on the tail shaft of the transfer case housing and how important is it?

i was dumb and purchased a 242 transfer case out of an 03, assuming they'd be pretty much the same and maybe need the housing swapped.. well i suck and i can't get the housing swapped and after i completely gave up, i took it to a tranny shop and they said they couldn't do it either. i dont' want to be completely out the money that i paid for it, so i was wondering how bad it would be just to use the new transfer case w/o that rear sensor?

...i already have a feeling i know the answer to this question =/

The rear sensor should be the speedometer sensor. Sure you can drive without it, but you won't know how fast you're going when passing all them fords!!!

well.. iunno.. i mean here's where i'm at with this project.. i rocked out the 242 transfer case for 150 shipped.. which i think is pretty good..

i called down to the local junkyard that deals entirely with 4x4 stuff and they said they've got a 231 out of a 94zj w/ 86,000 on it for $450.. which seems kinda high to me.

i don't want to be in $600 on this project if i don't have to be, but it's dragged on waaay to long for something this simple and i'm about to just go do it.

is there some other way that i'd be able to get my speed-o working w/o having that cover? thanks guys!

on second thought, screw it. i'll just run it until it breaks (which i'm sure won't be too long) and then i'll worry about how fast i'm going.. it's not my daily driver so w/e. Cool
