I got a 98 XJ and my A/C stopped working a while ago. I went to a AAA repair shop and they told me that my system had a leak, I need a new evaporator and they would charge me 1,200 bucks to get it fixed.

I think that is a lot since the actual evaporator is 200 bucks brand new. I know it requires some labor to the that done but I think 1,000 bucks for a little thingie seems expensive to me.

What do you guys think, are they trying to rip me off?

That's what I was told also. The part is relatively cheap, but the labor's where they get you. Because the evaporator is behind the dash, they have to pull almost the entire dash to get to it. To get back there I was told is 8 hours labor.

I said screw it and have been driving the last 2 years without it, that is, until I get the stones to tear apart the dash myself.

It is time consuming getting under there. But it isn't an 8 hour project. I changed the heater core in my 88 and it wasn't too difficult. The evaporator and heater core hang out together under there. If you want air I would say it's worth doing. I ripped mine out as well as all the a/c sh!t. Only after did I find out that I could have used the condenser as a tranny cooler Embarassed .
