Could someone please help me with this one . In march I had to change my starter , it went out on me at a time that I could not afford to be down. Had a buddy of mine change it out for me , I was too busy taking care of other business. Everything was fine until Sunday , When I first got in to start it was like a skip before starting. Then yesterday when going to pick up some cold ones ,when I came out of the store to go back home no start . Starter has warranty , But wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how did they solve it . Thanks for any input.

There could be a couple reasons why this happened. Is the starter spinning even though the Jeep isn't starting? There could be some teeth missing on the flywheel. The wires could be loose or dirty. Could need to be shimmed or maybe unshimmed. If you wheel a lot, it could be filled with shit from the trails. I would pull the starter off and check for wear on the starter gear and the flywheel. Have someone bump the key so you can check the complete flywheel. Note any wear and post it up, take pics if you can! The starter may just be shot, new ones can just die too. Good thing for the warranty!

Thanks Orange , Dont do trails yet. But I do a lot of highway . Checked the starter , posts and everything was clean . When the key is turned there is only one click , not like the other starters with a clicking sound.

You could always try the hammer trick, get under there and whack the starter good a couple of times. Sometimes they stick and hitting it freezes it enough to turn. It worked for me before, I disassembled the starter after and cleaned it all out and it never happened again. How's your battery, does it have plenty of juice?

Yeah ,did the hammer trick . Didn't work , so my buddy will put it back on for me today while I am at work , after he picks it up from the place that worked on it the first time. Maybe they will have an answer for why I am having problems with it . If there is any reasons why I will post them so if anyone else runs into this same thing then they will have some kind of idea of what to check for. tool

I would check the starter on your battery with a pair of jumper cables..

It sounds like maybe the solinoid but who knows .. If its not spinning at all maybe its an ignition problem.. (My key switch went out on mine back in 96 or so and it just wouldnt start... Imagine that..)

Shimming could help but if it didnt have shims before and they only rebuilt it then it shouldnt need them now..

Let us know what you find out..

the hammer trick only needs to be used if you have a low battery and you welded your starter together , other wise it does nothing .

could be a solenoid , i would do what swamp boy says and run a jumper to your starter and see how i goes

Brad, I had a full battery and my ZJ wouldn't start. After repeated tries and nothing, a buddy suggested the hammer. It fired immediately after I hit it. When I got home I opened the starter (it was the original) and it was filthy and gummed up. I took a can of brake cleaner, a tooth brush and a small screwdriver, cleaned it till looked like new. Then regreased any moving parts and reinstalled it. That was over two years ago and it's still fine. I have a red top Optima. I had the same battery then, as I have now. It's still fully charged, as it was then. What are you talking about?
???

Well guys it was the starter . Very Happy The place that re-wound it said that when it was re-wound that one of the connections shook loose inside . So for my troubles he extended my warranty on it Smile . So back in the truck Mr. Green and rolling again . But will also check the solinoid ( hope I spelled that right ) to see if that might be a problem to come . Any suggestions on how best to do that ? And also thanks for all the help that you guys provided Cool .

you hit it with a hammer because the contact points that the solenoid moves weld together under a low battery situation , hitting it with a hammer brakes weld , if you look the contact plate you can some times see scorch marks from were it attempted to weld it's self together .

Well it worked for me, and there was no "low battery situation". I do know what I'm talking about! Cool You're guessing. Sad
