i have 93 gc limited with a np 249.just had tranny rebuilt 1year ago.now i start to go tranny shifts fine for about 5 miles then if i stop no drive in any gear.tranny fluid not burnt or metal flakes in tranny fluid.purchased another 249 ,(heard roaring noise from orig 249).installed 2nd 249 pulled great first 30 min. now back to same ole no pull.adjusted bands no help.please help me!

get a 242 or a 231

While I agree with DankNess, that both the 242 and 231 are better units than the 249, a lifetime of 30 min. seems a tad on the short side shock, particularly as this is not the description of the 249's common failure mode. Is it possible that the control lever linkage is bent / far enough out of adjustment that the t-case is slipping into neutral? If not, I would suspect the tranny. I would take it to the shop that rebuilt it. Even though it may be out of warranty after one year, they should at least, if they have any concept of customer service, help you diagnose what's going on.
