This weekend I was turning onto my driveway when my steering went out on my 97 TJ. I could turn the steering wheel but the wheels would not respond. After investigating the problem, I noticed the steering yoke had become disconnected from the spline just at the firewall driverside. The interesting thing was the bolt that is used to tighten the yoke to the spline was still tight. Had this happened to me on the interstate going 70 mph, I might not be here today. I cannot figure out what might have caused this to happen. Has anyone experienced this problem or have any suggestions to what might be the cause?

p.s. If this happens to you, don't spin the steering wheel or you'll break the clockspring for your airbag. I did...costly mistake!

Is your steering stock? If it is, file a complaint with NHTSA.

I was thinking to file a complaint after getting some replies to this post. I'm hoping someone might turn me on to something I might have done through normal driving or some other issue with the steering that might have contributed to the cause. If it happened once, it might happen again and I might not be so lucky the next time.

Steering is stock only thing not stock on the jeep is a set of 31 inch tires and a new set of Dick Cepek DC-1 rims. The new rims, with their backspacing allowed me to remove some washers I put on the steering stops to prevent rubbing. After realizing how difficult it was to reconnect, I was thinking the yoke and spline were never assembled properly from the factory or something. Very tight fit for the spline into the yoke and with the bolt tight, I can't, for the life of me, figure how it could just slip off. I didn't see any indications the previous owner might have done work to the front end.
