I have a 1994 YJ 4.0L 5-speed, 32" tires 3.73 diff. I recently took a trip to Colorado and experienced significantly better MPG in Colorado than I ever have. before I left I checked all the plugs, wires and rotor (all new) and replaced the O2 sensor (original with 115K) as part of routine maintenance. On the trip to Colorado I only acheived 16 - 18 MPG @ 65 MPH loaded with 500 lbs of camping gear. Once I arrived in Denver I filled up with 85 octane and headed for the montains. This next tank I was able to get 21.5 MPG. This is with a few 2 hour long moderate 4WD trails. I experienced better than 20 MPG the entire time I was there. On the return trip I made it all the way to Coby, KS and flled up there with 87 octane. The next two tanks were horrible, only getting 16 and 17 MPG. I lost 100 miles per tank on the trip there and the trip back. Any idea as to why the better MPG at higher altitudes? Could it be that the ECM makes my Jeep run too righ when closer to sea level?

not sure about the altitude making for better mpg... but if it wasn't windy that might have helped. rofl
