OK, so I searched and read what I could and I want to know if anyone has any tips for changing U-Joints on my front drive shaft. Its the front most one thats clicking but I figure that while I'm at it I better do both, and the rear ones as well.

I do have a few questions ... the Haynes manual suggests that I need new straps if I remove the existing u joint. Do I really? Do they come with new joints?

Any tips on disassembly? I found a few sites that covered removing the actual u-joint from the yoke, but not the driveshaft from my Jeep. I'm in Canada, and its rusty here with all the salt on the roads.

Thanks ...

First thing is spray the caps and straps liberally with wd or equivalent. I only replace the straps if they look damaged, but you can change them if you want. They are cheap, but are sold seperately from the u-joints. Also you could at this time upgrade the straps to u-bolts, which would involve drilling out the yoke holes or buying new yokes. What are you not sure about? Post that link you checked out and anything they missed I'll fill in!

First of all I really appreciate the help. I'm on a few mountain bike boards too and theyre useless for a little assistance.

I looked at that site, and it seems pretty straightforward. They dont show removing the driveshaft though. That looks like just a few little bolts - doesnt seem like much to hold a driveshaft on. Are u-bolts that much stronger/more easily servicable?

Yeah, just remove the strap bolts and the driveshafts will come right off. You might have to pry a little between the u-joint and yoke to get the u-joint to break free from it. Make sure you support the driveshaft so it don't clobber you!
The u-bolts are stronger, not neccessarily more servicable. If you're happy with the straps then don't even worry about it. I've only put the u-bolts on my CJ, but that's because I was ripping the straps right off the yoke!

Hey guys, i want in on this topic. i need to do the fronts on my 97 sport. once you remove the clamps and drop the shart, should the shaft pull right off the gear? the front shaft goes under the skid plate, dose that need to be removed? can the skid plate be removed without the transmission falling down.

thanks

I found this for you. I wouldn't do it exactly this way, but it gives the general method.

Thanks, those kinda didnt look like the same one i have, maybe looking at it wrong. another thing. i had bad ujoint in rear, repalced both. im not too sure what affect a bad ujoint in front would have if 4wd was not engaged, could it still cause vibration if only 2wd was engaged?

not the best mechanic, sorry
