I've been chasing down a squeak on my 97 GC and traced it to a shaft that connects the shifter with the auto transmission linkage.
This shaft seems to be suspended between the transmission itself and a bracket on the body. What happens is if the transmission shifts
from side to side then the shaft is sliding in the hole it goes through on the bracket on the body. Metal on metal = squeak.

So a few questions:

1) I assume the transmission is supposed to allow a minimal amount of side to side sliding? Its not loose by any means. I have to grab the tranmission and really push/pull it from side to side to get the squeak to happen.

2) Should there be a bushing on the end of this shaft? Maybe its just worn out after 11 year and 156K miles

thanks!

That looks like your t-case linkage. I would just throw some bearing grease on it! A grease gun with a needle tip would work great!
