My 1999 JGC with 160,000 miles began to leak transmission fluid really bad near the T-case. I drove it on Saturday and today I noticed a dripping puddle underneath the t-case and rear transmission. I understand that the transmission has a rear seal. How do I replace this?

A mechanic shop gave me a quote $250 and said that there are two seals to replace, one in the T-case and the other the rear transmission seal. What do you guys think?

good price but you could do it yourself .

seals are probably 40$ , i don't remember what the usual labor rate is for automotive but in hd we charge between 115-130/hr if anything that quote is a little low . or spot on .

if you can remove the t-case and are able to pull a seal out then you can do it .

if you have never pulled out a seal or installed one and have no idea how , well i guess you can try . if you want i or some one else will go through it with you .

I have never pulled a transfer case or installed one and have no idea of how to do it. I would appreciate all the help I can get and I would be willing to try to fix it by myself and learn. I just looked at it and it is still leaking transmission fluid. I am thinking it will probably continue to leak it until its empty.

It is leaking from the bottom rear of the transmission where it butts up with the transfer case. I have tried to tighten the nuts and they are as tight as they will go.

The mechanic who quoted me said that since he would be replacing the rear transmission seal he would also replace another seal. What would that other seal be?

Other information: It is a 4.0 Liter 4 wheel drive.

Thank You for your help! Very Happy
