How necessary is the Heat riser tube on an 89 XJ????? I removed the heat riser from my lowered 78 Chevy pickup and converted it to a custom built cold/ ram air system. It really improved my power and mileage. I would like to do something similar to my XJ, but I wanted to make sure it wouldn't screw anything up on it. I am very good with older vehicles, but with the 89, I would just like to ask before I yank something out.
Thanks!

Not all of us have....this is the first time I've seen it....

There's a big difference between a computer controlled fuel injected motor (89 XJ) and a naturally aspirated motor (78 Chevy). Removing the heat riser will increase power and throttle response somewhat. However, you should also thoroughly clean the throttle body, the stepper motor and you'll definitely need to disconnect the battery for at least an hour after the mod. If not, the computer will try to compensate by causing the motor to idle between 1200 and 2000 RPM...and even that is no guarantee that the motor won't idle high.

OK, Thanks!!! I knew there had to be something to do with the computer that made this different than my 78. This is why I had to ask. The heat riser tube in my XJ has come disconected from the exhaust port. I tried to get it back on, but it doesn't seem to want to fit back in. That is why I considered removing it and blocking off the hole.
Thanks!

The tube that takes warm air from the exhaust and pipes it into the airbox to prewarm it before it gets into the engine. I removed this tube on my 78 Chevy pickup and piped the intake hose straight through the grill, which at highway speeds gave a Ram Air/ Cold Air effect. I ended up getting better mileage and had more power!!
