So the swap is now complete... now it has a whiring noise coming from the T-Case. Is it possible that the gears need to wear in together?

I swapped the entire planetary set into the 242 from the 249, spun free while off the jeep, no binding.

It seems like the noise is slowly diminishing but just worried about it.

Also how hot should the case get? Never felt the 249 after driving for a bit, had no reason to.

The 242 Case is a '89, 249 is a 93... Jeep is a 98... I kinda lucked out and got a free 249 to get the input shaft out of because of the gear cut problem.

I did However get another 242 case out of a 96 with the right length input shaft yesterday so now this one is going to go in hopefully today.

Once I get the one installed out I am going to rip it apart again and see what the trouble is. I know it is in the input area of the case... it also does it when the case is in neutral.

Oh well I can either get my money back on 242 #1, or end up selling it after I figure out the problem so no real harm done, haven't been driving it far, just around town, and have the car if I need it until I get this done. Sooo tempted to go off road, but the thought of my jeep getting towed out by my friends F150 puts an end to those ideas...

My swap used an 88 XJ 231 and a 94 ZJ 249. The pitch was a hair different, the 249 teeth were pointed at the tips making them longer, while the 231 teeth were flat (shorter). If you swap the input gear from the 249 into the planetary gears from the 242, instead of swapping the whole thing, it will work fine!

242 #2 is now in... My ZJ is temp Front Wheel Drive...

This case is the Late model 242(rubber boot instead of the Tail Housing)

I can't get the rear drive shaft on... I am really 1 small curly hair away from getting this on.

ZJ 1998 5.2 (No up country suspension)
Case 1996 from a 4.0
Nothing more is being done to the Jeep i.e. Lift, Bigger tires, etc. She is staying stock as I don't do any real hardcore off roading. Just your basic trail rides, small obstacles, shallow creek crossings etc.

What part of this driveshaft can I cut to make it go on? Can I get away with cutting the Slip Yoke about 3/4"?

I really don't feel like spending the money to get the driveshaft trimmed and rebalanced as I am on case #2 now because of that noise(which happened to be the gears were slightly more pointy than the original planetary) no damage to the gears at all, just an annoying sound. So one 242 going up for sale $175 ( Extra input shafts included)
