I have an 88 jeep cherokee and I want to put a grill from a 97+ cherokee does anybody know if these are interchangeable or not and if not how much work would be required to make it fit

They are interchangeable, but it looks horrible. If you are up to it, it's possible to change the whole front end to the newer 97-01.

Like TheBrat97 already said, they are interchangable, but the edges of the '85-'96 Cherokee fenders are squared (chamfered), whereas the edges of the '97+ are rounded (filleted). So if it doesn't bother you to see the squared edges of the exist fenders not lining up with the rounded edge grill, then go ahead.
But the fenders and flares are also interchangable, so if you replaced the front fenders and all the flares, it would look just like a '97+, from the front and a '85-'96 from the back (rear lift hatches are not interchangable).

This post (http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/BensXJ.htm) from GoJeep is about a guy who replace the front grill, fenders, power mirrors, and flares to make it look like a '97+ Cherokee. From a short distance, only someone who is very familiar with Cherokees and sees the squared tail-lights and rear-hatch would notice this is a swap.
