Then my guess is a problem with airflow. I know the zjs trap a lot of heat under the hood, hence why they have louvers on the 5.9. Yea its a bigger motor but the 5.9 rams dont have louvers.

I guess you could install louvers if your climate allows. I know they had a write up in the petersens mag a few years ago

are you running the radiator phantum??? if you dont mind you seem someone who knows what there talking about if you dont mind could you tell me what your running cooling isnt one of my strong points on vechiles...i know hot bad to cold bad in the middle- perfect

Everything I'm running is in the link I posted: http://jeephorizons.com/tech/xj_cooling.html

However, I'm not a good example anymore...between the bumper/winch blocking the grill and the 4.56 gears, I tend to run hot on the highway. It runs about normal on the trail though...which is what matters. Wink

I just re-read your original post from the top and noticed this:

ive also noticed the top of my fan shroud is gone

Coupled with the symptoms:

all i kno is a run fine at highway speed and when i stop and stand i get real hot and my dash lights up like a damn christmas tree....

All I can say is...well... thars yer problem. Wink

Without the shroud, the mechanical fan will move much less air across the radiator. Essentially, it's much easier for the fan to move air through the top of the shroud instead of through the fins. At highway speed, air is being pushed into the rad, so the shroud doesn't matter. But at slow speeds, it becomes an important factor.

At 240 degrees your condenser fan should have cut on. They are supposed to cut on at 215-225 degrees reagardless whether the AC is on or not. I have an 1988 with an electric fan for the fan clutch and I never
have seen it above 206 degrees. My 1991 XJ stays at 208 all the time.

A simple trick is to raise the back of your hood a little.. get longer bolts and stack washers or make spacers. This will allow heat to escape easily.
Sounds like you've got more issues than this will solve... but's an easy thing to do.

I think your radiator is not cooling efficiently. Even a stock replacement rad will be better than the old one

If it was a radiator efficiency problem, it would run hot on the highway. Replacing the radiator without fixing the broken shroud first is going to throw money at the problem and not actually fix it.

I'm not saying that replacing the radiator won't help keep the engine cooler...quite the opposite. I highly recommend going to a 3 core all metal rad. It's a good mod...but in this case, it won't solve the problem. Wink

i "ghetto" rigged a fix for my shord to see if its the problem with some thin aluminum to cover the broken top part....also replaced the hoses and re sprayed the radiator...seems to make a HUGE diffrience...im guessing it was like fact thaat the top half of the shroud that iseffin me up heading to a junkyard and gonna snag hopefully a free one
