Definately take the stroker over the swap. but if you do let me recommend not going much bigger than the 4.5 or 4.6. from what i've heard the 4.9 and 5.0's don't last too long, but that depends on how you drive it. I'm actually probably going to go for the 4.6. keep in mind also that if you're looking for a way to make your jeep faster that stroking out a 4.0 will be much lighter than stepping it up to a v8. as an added bonus maybe

Actually the 4.0 and a 302 with aluminum heads are VERY close in weight. Prob within 10lbs. You could do a ford 281 swap with aluminum block and heads and prob save some weight. Although I would still go with stroking the 4.0 due to cost and ease.

Stroker Information
Why not make a 4.6L stroker out of it, you only need a crank, connecting rods, pistons and some machining, and probably injectors and I believe a fuel pressure regulator, and maybe a map adjustment. You could easily do a stroker for under 2000 $. It looks like itís the best way to get power (250~260 hp with a torque curve from hell) out of the old 4 L as long as you are not afraid to take the engine out. Use a 1996 or newer block the blocks were stiffened with extra ribbing and main bearing brace was added.

They aren't cheap. I have only heard about the performance gain from these, I have never tried one, but there are plenty of people who have them, perhaps they will pipe in.

I'm just going to go with another XJ inline 6. Whare is a good place to get one cheap but in good running condition, and how much would it cost about? The 350 would be fun but I think the inline 6 has more alure.
