i'm still confused on why you would want to move backward with this type of swap.most states have laws against swapping in an old motor.the second problem i can think of is aren't the motor mounts completely different on the ZJ and XJ?I'm not talking about the mounts themselves but how it even bolts to the motor.

1. The ZJ has a RE model transmission. The XJ has an AW4. The ZJ transmission has to go away (my boss is keeping it when he sells me the ZJ). I don't know if the AW4 will work properly with the ZJs electronics (TCU) or if the drive shaft lengths will be any different.
2. I live in one of those few donerful states that don't give a crap about their environment (South Carolina) and ironically in a city called Greenville. No emissions testing, no laws about motor swaps.

I would recomend you get another 42re to replace it, if you dont plan to hardcore wheel it. If you have major plans to wheel it then do some searching on the web to find ways to make the aw4 work in the zj

Alright. Yeah, I think I'm going to dig up a 42RE at a junk yard. I really appreciate all your help. Wish me luck!

Alright, I'm going to sound like a total idiot by posting again, but there was a mixup with the VIN (long story short, they gave me the VIN from the wrong Grand Cherokee) and the one I'm going to be buying is a 1997. Does this change anything?
Also, is the TCU the only big issue with swapping an AW4 in for a 42RE? Just curious...

The aw4 will bolt up, and it should fit with minor to no mods with the shifter linkage and such, but the driveshafts may need to be modified
