Took my 88 Pioneer in after each overheating. Mechanic started out Replace Thermostat. Coolant, Replace Hoses. .More coolant....Replace and check...more coolant...
Hoses probably needed it, but not that badly.
Took in to mechanic for last time. He Finds problem is blown valve/Coolant Reservoir. He said Oh, sure, some jeeps tend to blow them out. Cost about $150. That was the last time my jeep ever saw THAT shop!
Anyone have similar experience with jeep coolant reservoirs?
Did you catch it in time?

It sounds accurate.

87-90 XJs have the closed cooling system. The closed system needs to stay pressurized and everything has to be perfect for it to function properly. So it's not nearly as forgiving as the traditional "open" system. As soon as any kind of leak develops, air gets in and overheating is inevitable.

The pressure bottle and seal cap in the system are the typical weak points. Both are plastic and prone to failure. The bottle tends to crack around the bottom hose outlet. The cap is has a tendency to distort and allow pressure to escape, which let's air in and leads to overheating.

The main problem with the closed system though is that if you do overheat, you can't just put coolant back in and go. The whole system needs to be bled or "burped" of all air or it will overheat again.
