As some may know I have an 86 Cherokee with the 2.5 and my front driveshaft went out... I have a 1990 4.0 Cherokee sitting outback with a rough motor and was wondering if they had the same front driveshaft?

Most of the U-Joints are the same. The lengths and styles differ slightly.

The drive shaft interchanges are as follows:

*84-86: Front drive shafts fit 2.5 & 2.8L manual/auto applications, and come with or without a boot.
*87-01: 4/6cyl auto fits auto, 4cyl manual fits 4cyl manual, 6cyl manual fits 6cyl manual.
These also come with or without a boot.

Best thing to do is measure what you have weld to weld, and makes sure they use the same or similar U-joints.
It also helps to know what trans you have in each Jeep...

thanks for the input, I answered my own question by sliding around on the ice trying to get to the 6cyl jeep... one look said NOPE. not even matching ujoints. Just went out and got a reman'd front shaft for 100 bucks Smile not a bad deal. Now I am going to be taking the 5x5 1/2 wheel adapters off the newer jeep and put them on mine so I can run bigger bolt pattern rims. I found out the rims and tires i got for free were 5 on 5 1/2, thankfully the tractor tires my dad fabbed to fit 5 on 5 1/2 were on the 6 cyl jeep. Yes, it looks goofy I'll send a pic of it to anyone who asks... and yes, tractor tread and yellow rim and all. hahaha
