This is my first AWD Jeep, so I wasn't sure about the grinding/growling noise it makes when cornering at slow speeds. I thought it may be typical of AWD. I don't hear any unusual sounds at highway speeds, or when going straight.

I just drove 9 hours to the coast, and I noticed both front wheels had a rust colored tint to them, like I had been driving in clay. It wipes right off with the finger, and smells metallic. My first thought - wheel bearing/hubs?

Any thoughts? I have to drive home tomorrow, and would like to make it!

It's a '93, 5.2 all-time AWD with 148K miles.

Thanks.

The powder is most likely coming from your brakes. You'll be needing some new pads, at least.

I'm not sure about the noise in the front end, but it may be sign that your t-case is on it's way out. The fulltime t-cases don't last very long.

The t-case was my next thought - I've read that they go out - was hoping for something less serious. The dealer I bought it from has a 6000-mile warranty on the drive train, so I will be talking with them soon!

Take the wheels off and have a look. If you're grinding away on some metal part, it'll be clearly evident once the wheels are removed.
