OK so I bought a 98 GC with 136k on the clock. Runs and drives great, except for the whine coming from the rear end. Dealer said he replaced the bearings (I'm assuming on the axle shafts) and stated that this whine is normal on jeeps, they have seen it a bunch of times before. I have done a bit of research, and I am leaning towards the pinion bearing or too tight of lash in the spiders.. I have no tools nor any knowledge of working on cars other than tune ups and such.. I can however read a book and follow its instructions and borrow tools. I have 2 kids and a wife, work 2 jobs and dont have much time for ANYTHING. My question is this: Can I change the pinion bearing quickly? How hard is it to set lash? I'm sure the axle is full and its clearly not a U-joint sound. It is def. in the axle, I got in back while on the highway. (ofcourse I wasn't alone!) This is my wife's daily driver so I'm a bit scared, my hole family will be riding in it, so another question: if it fails, will the rear lock up? My first ever Daimler-Chrysler purchase, even though it was made before the merge. sorry for the long post, thanks in advance. Heres a pic of me, right before I bought it.
