I here the GM 3.4's from Camero's fit nicely... I'm curious to see what people have to say though.

nothing is easy , i would think the simplest would be a 4.0 out of a jeep .

or buy a Cherokee with a 4.0 .

i would honestly buy a compete drive train out of a 318 grand Cherokee . easiest way to do it , or a h.o 5.0 out of a ford truck stock with roller cam like doesn't get much better then that for a stock engine .

ya there is the 350 chev with a turbo700 , but a turbo 700 is a big transmission .

im not a ford fan but i think a 5.0 or a 318dodge belongs in a cherokee .

just me .

So, from what I've read... Basically there's no reasonable way anyone is going to get a Jeep 4.0 engine into a pre-'87 Cherokee.

Also, if you replace you engine, you'll probably have to replace the transmission. Like Brad said... You might as well just get an entirely new drive train.

I'm going to hang on to my '86 Cherokee with the GM 2.8 V6 but for the long run, I'm going to save up and buy a stock XJ that has a 4.0 HO already in it. Personally, that would suit me best.

Someday though, I'd like to drop a new drive train into my '86 and completely restore it's "stock" cosmetics while doing everything possible to enhance its performance mechanically as far as 4X4 goes.
