My 1986 GM 2.8 V6 with stock 215X75R15 tires gets around 17/21 MPG City/Highway but with some help from a carburetor heater that I have (but can't seem to hook up) it should get another 5 MPG.

My girlfriends 1993 4.0 H.O. XJ with 30X9.5 tires and a 2" lift gets 17/20 MPG City/Highway with the help of a K&N air filter and a Flowmaster exhaust system.

I just did a report on the XJ for my college Expos. II class. According to edmunds.com and Consumer Guide Automotive, the stock XJs should average 16/21. Now if you have a lifted XJ with bigger tires, theoretically your gas mileage should drop a little...not much though. If your getting 14.5 thats a little below the average. As for mine, I havn't calculated it yet, but would guess its right around the average( having a 4" lift and 31's but with free flowing intake and exhaust is also helping me a little)

I have owned a 1987 and a 1998 Cherokee, my brother owns a 1995, and my brother-in-law owns a 2000. None of them are very far from stock. They all average out to about 15-16mpg (that might even be a bit generous). During all-highway road trips, they could touch on 17mpg, but during hard in-town driving they get about 12-14 mpg. I have never personally witnessed the 21mpg highway, but if you were doing a road trip, drove 55mph, drafted a Semi, and had the wind at your back, theoretically it might be possible.

If you have a heavy foot during your daily driving, I think 14.5 is normal from my experience. I quit calculating my gas mileage about 6 months ago because it was causing depression.

Let me add the only time I have actually calculated my MPG is from an interstate trip(70-75mpg avg), FULL load(rear seat folded down with with no room to spare for extra cargo in back and a passenger and myself). Surprisingly I averaged about 17mpg. Never hurts to give the ole XJ a tune-up though, might be able to sqeeze out a mile or two extra.

Mine is somewhere between 10 - 15 mpg, but I can't pinpoint it exactly because my spedo has never been recalibrated for my oversized tires. If I pinpointed mine to be anything above 14, I'd be happy. cherokees are known to be very thirsty!

I did the math last tank because I just got the RIG and I'm right at 15-16 MPG. I tried somethings this week, but warming the vehicle up and leaving it running could have screwed with my #s this week. Neutral

Its been a long time since mine was checked but it used to get 25mpg. But it also has a 2.5L so that probably has a lot to do with it.

well, 14.5 seems about average considering the weight of my right foot.

However, Im also running very COLD. The temp guage never gets past the 1st tick mark on the left. It never even gets to the middle.

I was thinking i have a bad sensor somewhere and maybe the computer (does my 89 xj have a 'computer') is running in some sort of safe mode and flooding the engine with fuel, running super rich and foiling my gas mileage.

Maybe I should start a new post with this.

I'm getting 10.9 city and 15-16 highway.

Thorley Header
Air Raid intake
TBS
SuperCoil
8.5mm wires
32X11.5 MT's

I did get 70mpg once, I was headed west out the the rockies coasting in neutral. I actually maintains 75mph. it was the cheapest ride ever in my jeep.

Off road in 4H I think I'm down around7-8mpg and I don't want to know what Iget in 4L
