On general day to day she'll do 14, on a good run about 17.

i have 1996 4L everything standard and well maintained.
Getting a lousy 8mpg on highway.

the question is what should be looked at to improve this ????

My 30 year old landcruiser gets 20mpg , starting to think jeeps are not so good.
Sad

I have an idea, sell your Jeep and drive your Land Cruiser. Then you won't have to log on to a Jeep dedicated site and complain about Jeeps! no

If your only getting 8mpg on the highway, I don't care how well maintained it is...it ain't the Jeep. Something is wrong and needs to be fixed. It could be anything from tire pressures to tuneup...

1988 Wagoneer 18.5 City Hwy unknown Hypermiling
1991 Cherokee 19.5 City 21 Hwy Hypermiling
Try Hypermiling. It works.
Drop you speed to about 55 and watch your tach, keep it about 2,000 rpms.
Take off slow try to keep the tranny from going above 2,000 rpms
when shifting.
Before hypermiling

1977 Jeep Cherokee Chief; 360ci V8, two barrel carburetor, overall mediocre
cosmetic condition (due to the fact that cars in Maine literally rust in half at this poor beasts age), very solid mechanically though (thanks to 1970s Jeep quality)...

Guestimated off-road economy (since it's not road legal, that's mostly where it is driven): 10 mpg at best.

Although it does only have the two-barrel carb...it would probably get better economy if this truck had been babied throughout this life. It hasn't though.

I should have known mentioning landcruiser here would get me lynched !

No offense to our jeep lovers .

This terrible fuel consumption is an issue , what I would like to know is how far can a tune up go to help correct this. Can the engine computer be adjusted to alter fuel consumption ?

I would be good to know just what tune ups can do before I pay someone $500 to look at it and tell me they cant do anything.

Fuel now almost $8.00 a gallon in my area so I need to look at it seriously.

when i posted a while back, i was getting 11 in town 22 on hwy.
and my wife was driving it all the time,
so i was neglecting a bit,
so even though it wasnt due, gave it a good tune up, and ran some cans of Berrymans through it on a couple of fill ups
and last two times i checked, i'm up to 14 in town,
but haven't gone out of town yet, so i dont know the Hwy MPG

and i also flushed coolant, and put a 160 degree thermostat in to keep it a little cooler,

i did all of these things within the same week, so i dont know if the thermostat helped out or not with the mileage, but it makes me feel better

A 160 degree thermostat will actually hurt gas mileage. If the engine temp is under 180, the computer will stay in open loop...meaning it will run the engine richer in an attempt to get it up to temperature. So all putting a 160 thermostat in does is make the engine take longer to warm up...and you'll burn more gas while it does. Wink
