Can anybody advise? I have a 96 xj and the battery is going flat real ly fast. I charged up a spare battery and connected it up to my car and my multimeter. As I connected the battery the meter went down to virtually nothing. On dissconnecting the battery I metered at 8 volts, down from 14 when I connected it.

That sounds like a pretty serious power drain. How long dd you have it connected that it lost the 6 volts? Does it spark pretty heavily when you connect the possitive to a newly charged battery?

I would start by simply checking the "fat" wires that come directly off the battery. And especially check the positive wire that goes to the starter, both visually and with the tester.

You might be able to eliminate certains systems by using your voltmeter to eliminate wires that come off the battery and the fuse box one at a time.
