Stock YJ's will have a D35 in the rear. I think that string of #'s is missing a number or two. Make sure is clearly readable and see if there are more. If not check the front tag. What engine and tranny do you have?

I "assume" his FRONT tag reads:

53005567 10 610319-4

Dana 30

1990- 90 1/2 YJ Disconnect
4.10 gears

This from page 5 of the Table in 2nd link of my post (SPICER/DANA Parts list for 30)

You realize of course you must get same gears front and rear if you are swapping a Ford Axle right? If not the first time you put it in 4WD, you will not like the results! Something is going to break!

Now I am confused. D30 on front. Info was from Front Diff tag.

Now you are talking REAR again. You MOST PROBABLY currently have a D35 on the rear and that is probably as weak an axle as you could possibly have. A FORD 8.8 would be a nice upgrade!

What gears are in the rear you are planning on swapping into it?

They will need to match the 4.10 you currently have in the front or you will need to regear front to match rear (or regear rear to match front) . . . .

They MUST match!

As was mentioned, the gear ratio must match front and rear or you'll have major damage the first time you put it into 4wd.

I deleted your other thread because it seemed to be the same thing you were asking here.

I'm still not sure what the hell you're asking but I'm gonna give this my best shot.

Your YJ has a D30 in the front and D35 in the rear. Being a 4-cyl, 5-speed, you should have 4.10 or 4.11 gears in them. These ratios are essentially the same. For simplicity, I will call them 4.10 for the remainder of my answer.

If you want to swap in an 8.8, you need to find one from a 95-02 Ford Explorer. Not a Mustang, not a Ranger, not an F-150. An Explorer or one of the other manifestations like a Mercury Mountaineer. They are available with 4.10s from the factory which would make matching your front axle (the D30) easy. However, being that you have a 4-cyl and you want to run heavy 33" tires, I would strongly recommend a better gear ratio. I'd go with 4.88, which also happens to be the lowest gear you can install in a D30 and is also available for the 8.8.

It does but has that axle been regeared? That's not an OEM ratio.

It will turn them but you won't like the lack of performance.

PostPosted: Tue Sep 23, 2008 6:28 pm    Post subject: continued gear question... Reply with quote

I just picked up a D44 supposedly out of a 76 cherokee, I opened the diff and on the ring gear, just after the other string of numbers is "377" in larger font than the others.... does that mean the gears in it are 3.77?? It doesn't look like anyone has upgraded these axles, but I'm not good enough to know for sure.... Help
