Transfer Case Issue? Or Is This Normal?

Vehicle: 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport, Automatic Transmission, Command Track Transfercase.

I crawled under my girlfriend's and noticed that unlike my front drive shaft (when 4WD is not engauged) her front drive shaft did not freely spin when I tried to turn it with my hand. The vehicle was in 2WD, engine off and in park. Later that day I looked under her Jeep when she was backing up and I saw that the front drive shaft was rotating as she moved forward or backwards. We engauged 4WD drive and disengauged it while moving backwards but the drive shaft never stopped moving. She gunned it backwards in 2WD (as recommended by a fellow Jeep driver) and her back wheels lost traction on the wet cement just like they should have in 2WD. The front wheels didn't deliver any power but the drive shaft was spinning. Is this normal on this model of Jeep or do we have a problem? The 4WD works fine when the lever is engauged.

Any help or input is appreciated. Thank you -

Tim

Sounds normal. There is no axle disconnect on a 93 XJ. The front axle shafts always spin the diff internals which will spin the driveshaft when the vehicle is moving. You will not be able to spin the driveshaft by hand, regardless of t-case mode selection, with the front wheels on the ground.

He's exactly right, the only way that would turn is if you had manual locking hubs on the front axle.

Thanks for the help...

I'm glad there's nothing wrong with it!

I just thought it was odd because I can freely rotate my front driveshaft on my Jeep when its not in 4WD.

Thanks again, I appreciate it.

What Jeep do you have? I'm guessing it has manual hubs or the vacuum disconnect on the front axle. In this situation, you would be able to turn the shaft by hand with the vehicle in 2wd.

I think I have the vacuum disconnect. I cetainly don't have manual locking hubs.

It's an '86 Cherokee.
