i just did a search to see if this topic had been discussed before, but came up empty, so pardon me if it had and i simply missed it..

i just lost my '96 XJ Sport to engine failure at 219,666 (ominous, huh?), and am looking at a '99 XJ SE.

what is the difference between the Sport & SE models?
is it only interior features, such as sound bar above rear seat?
everything else seems the same.. 4.0 I6, etc.

There is the list of XJ models and the years they came out to help you. As far as the other stuff, the SE is the basic vanilla Cherokee with no door trim moulding, baseline wheels (not the 5-spoke mags), and most of the time manual locks and windows. Everything else was up to the dealership to add to sell the vehicle which is sometimes but not always...

1: AM/FM/CD Stereo
2: Rear window defroster
3: Rear window wiper/cleaner
4: Full-size spare (most came with the smaller donut)
5: Added towing package
6: Manual/Automatic Transmission

The Sports had the 5-spoke mag wheels, power locks/windows, rear window wiper and defroster, trim package, and AT LEAST an AM/FM/Cassette deck with added rear soundbar. Manual tranny wasn't as common in these but several do exist.

hey drake, thanks for the reply, that helps a lot.

the xj i'm looking at has a few of those options that are considered extra, such as the rear wiper & defroster and a cassette deck. not sure about the spare though, but is irrelevant b/c i can take the full size spare from my old jeep. as well as the rear soundbar, trailer hitch, and after-factory cd player. i'm almost happier having the 'vanilla' version.. it IS a jeep after all. the less 'bling' the better IMO.. (wish it was a stick too though!!)

while i'm on the subject of stripping the old jeep to benefit the new one, i have a few q's.
i just (w/in the last few years) changed the following:
water pump, alternator, starter, nice blacke-out rims and off road tires.
will those fit, or has there been some un-obvious changes that make them incompatible?

anything else of note that i should (or could) transfer from the '96 to the '99?
