I recently moved to a county that requires emissions testing for registration. My 82 CJ7 lacks any of the factory emissions plumbing, and I find that there is none available from junk yards anywhere. I really like this Jeep, would like to keep it, so am considering an engine swap to a late model 4.0. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has made this swap, and could give me some ideas about motor mount changes, and the difficulties with wiring in the computer for the FI system, etc. I plan to use the late model auto trans also, replacing my five speed.
Being on a retirement budget, I can't afford to buy a lot of adaptors etc, but will need to scrounge up as much as possible. Thanks for any info I can get.
Best regards to all,
Bob

Oh, that's too bad. I love my 4.2L. Mine doesn't have any emissions crap on it either, so I'd be screwed too. Sad

It would probably be cheaper to find a wrecked donor vehicle and strip it than it would be to buy from a dismantler.

Thanks for the responses, most especially to Code3TJ. I found enough info to get me through the swap. It appears that there is a good availability of used parts around to do the job, so getting started is the next step. Sooner, rather than later!
Thanks again.

Try J&J 4Wheel Drive - 423-344-3932. I was there not long ago and they had a bunch of Junkers that still had all the Smog stuff on them. They are a Jeep bone yard in eastern Tennessee and have a ton of early CJ's also.

Thanks Greg, for the info about J&J. I'll give them a call and see what they might have. I need everything for a complete set up. Pricing for their junk might be higher than the cost of putting in the late model stuff.
We'll see.
Thanks again.

Another Jeep parts yard is Scottie's Jeep in Fontana California.
14349 Whittram Avenue Fontana, CA 92335-3071 (909) 829-2913

They have every kind of Jeep part there is, plus the guys there know Jeeps inside and out.
Here in SoCal, they have a monopoly on used Jeep CJ, YJ and TJ parts, it's very rare to find a Jeep in any other wreaking yard in this area.
