Right now i have an '86, 2x4, 2.5L. I would like to get a 4x4 with a 4.0. I go to college next year, and my mom thinks i need something more dependable than a 22 year old jeep. So the only thing i will settle for is a newer jeep. So anyway, how much better would a new jeep be? Also, since i will be driving to college, how bad is the gas mileage?

I couldn't resist!

If u want to go fast or get blow away acceleration go with a 4.0. But for off road or towing/hauling the 2.5 is fine. The 2.8 has almost the same stats as the 2.5 so it will probably be close to the same. Just not as tough as the 2.5.

I also know the 4.0 4wd drive will go off road better, but the 2.5 2wd will still go anywhere anything NEEDS to go.

Thats not wheelin. My jeep will do that.

Then people need to quit saying you cant go wheeling in a 2wd.

Thats cool, my xj is gold, but its 1986 4dr.

Tim, you're right my xj does get good gas mileage. And it does go pretty good offroad. You posted the "zj in action photos" in the photo album. You quoted as doing a little wheelin' or something like that. Well, my 2wd will do all of that and more, as i have put it in worse places than that. Of coarse it won't do something such as "part 2 of AZ wheeling". I am merely pointing out that you can go offroad in a 2wd. And you said something on one post about having to put your jeep in 4wd to go up your driveway. Well if you leave a 4wd in 2wd it won't go as well as a plain old 2wd, because you have a lot more weight and you're not even putting it to use. But i have to be honest, i would like to have a 4wd, but a 2wd xj does good offroad.

Okay, you didn't think you were gonna get off that easy did you? I could keep listing these, but won't.

Are you looking for any newer 4x4 Jeep or are you gonna stick with an XJ?

Well i never said a 2x4 was better than a 4x4. But today i discovered that i can do as well offroad in my jeep as i can in my dads 4x4 truck. Then it just struck me like "hey, if my 2x4 jeep can keep up with this truck, imagine what the 4x4 jeep can do." But yes i want a newer xj. I think the xj is the nicest jeep. And how much difference will there be in a stick and an auto? In gas mileage?

97-99 XJ with 8.25 rear will have the best stock setup. As far as manual or auto, I'd go with whichever one you like best. I don't think there would be much difference, the 4.0's just aren't good on the mpg's. If you're gonna be driving this for a couple years, make sure you get what you want, for you, not for gas mileage. You don't want to be beating yourself over the head about not getting the auto or stick. Get the Jeep you're comfortable with.

We can tell you all day long how great a 4x4 is but you wont really know till someone takes you on a trail with a little more than a couple of speed bumps and some sticks. If you are happy with the two wheel drive and where you can go with it then stick with it. The newest xj you can buy is a 2001.

Yes, 8.25 is the rear end.
96 is also a good year, but the shafts are slightly smaller with less splines than the 97-99.
97 is the first year that the "new" body style was introduced.

4.0 is hard on fuel for the power you get out of it . electronically they should all be just as dependable however older jeeps will have random things go on like rads exploding , ground straps snapping , fuel pump mystery's .etc

newer is just better .

i wont say what i bought to replace my 4.0 xj which wont seem to sell .
