Hi folks,

I just got a 1999 cherokee, I6, AWD and automatic at a cheap price. A major issue with this jeep is the clunk noise on the rear end while car is moving.

The garage suggest a rebuilt of the rear diff after a brief diagnosis and want $750 for it. I wonder if this is a reasonable price.

Somebody also suggested me to swap in a new rear diff by myself. I am curious how difficult is this job? Any write-up? What is the best place to get the part.

Thanks.

$750 sounds a little high. Labor for a professional gear setup is usually about $250 plus some regional variation and variation from shop labor rates. Then add in parts...and not knowing exactly what's wrong with your rear, it's hard to say what parts are being replaced.

I'd suggest getting a written, itemized estimate and ask so see the damage. If it's something simple like spiders and side gears, then $750 is grossly overpriced. If it requires a full gear setup and all new parts, then $750 isn't too bad but still alittle high IMO.

Find one locally at a salvage yard. www.car-part.com

Installation is as simple as supporting the vehicle, disconnecting the brake lines, parking brake cables, driveshaft, differential breather, ABS sensors if so equipped, and unbolting the u-bolts that hold the axle to the leaf spring. Then slide it out. Installation is the reverse.

it will take you a couple hours , don't wreck the brake hose , undo it first .

i can pick up and walk around with the stock jeep diff , so its not that bad .

Welcome to the best Jeep XJ Forum
First question what is your level of mechanical ability [fair], work area [flat surfs] and tools [basic]?
If you canít meat the above conditions, get a second opinion. You could have something as simple as a bad u-joint.
Second question has this Jeep been lifted? If it has this might be your problem if it was not done properly.

Let us know if you want to take on this project yourself. If so there is a lot of good info available from many mines.

I don't know where you buy your gears, but that's a nice mark-up, especially since you're charging $350 for the setup.

I've bought Precision gears before. They aren't that much.

Most for a D44 start about $170-180.

Last time I did these repairs, I only charged $150 labor. The R&P were only $150. Damn, I'm cutting my own throat! rofl rofl

i dont want to get into a pissing match over this. i dont think it will get either of us anywhere. this is our price do do this job. we are actually cheaper that some of the other shops around. we did do a lot of research before we set the price and every time we get our prices increased we have to raise our price. i dont know how much you can charge to do this in Massachusetts or how many people you have working for you or what your overhead is. so i wont say your to low or high in your area. as you know doing business in southern california is very expensive especially in orange county.
