| I finally have the space to change my own oil, gave it try and can't get the damn filter off. Is there a special filter wrench that is needed? It is right on the front of the engine, but I can't get in there to remove the filter. 3.6L V6. Thanks for the help. |

There are special tools that you can buy at any auto parts store, they do have different sizes so you want to make sure you get the correct one...
An oil filter shouldn’t be over tightened, never tighten the filter with the wrench. Spin it on till the rubber gasket touches the engine firmly, and then give it a ¼ turn. The next time you do an oil change you should be able to loosen the filter by hand. Make sure to remove the old gasket before you install the new one! _________________ 2002 Wrangler Apex

I follow these directions pretty religiously - or at least the ones printed on the side of the filter. Have to say though that rarely if ever can I remove the filter by hand. I have about 4 different wrenches though just for pulling the filters. There have been one or two occasions when either a wrench didn't work or couldn't fit - at that point a large screwdriver managed to spear through the filter and allowed me to turn it loose that way. Funny how that happened..... _________________ 2003 TJ Sport |

I have had really bad luck with the screwdriver stabbing thru the side technique. I tore the bottom 2/3 off the filter and had to resort to using a spanner wrench that just happened to fit the holes in the base of the filter, it was a tight fit and took me near ½ hour to remove the filter.
I have never had a leak or a filter come loose due to my hand tightness, but my hand tight is pretty tight. _________________ 2002 Wrangler Apex
