This was my experience:

The mechanism was stuck. I could hear the lock engaging, but the door did not open. Here is what I did.

Find a partner. While one of you is inside adding leverage to the back door, the other should be trying to open it from the outside. When it does open, and it may take "liberal" amount of leverage and a few tugs, spray some sort of lubricant on the catch mechanism, WD-40 will work, and work it in a little by opening and closing the latch. Then open and close the hatch a few times to make sure it works properly while you have your partner handy. If it's the same issue this worked for me...good luck.

Instead of WD-40, I would recommend white lithium grease. It'll last longer.

What I really used was PB Blaster because that's the only thing I had in the back at the rest stop when we jacked the door open. White Lithium Grease would be the correct lubricating element to use. I stand corrected.

I have the same problem with my cherokee and it's becuase of a factory flaw when there's pressure on the gate. I don't know how to fix it, but it's a common problem
