Hey all...

Just got my '77 CJ7 Steel Stallion, (V-8, 5.0L?) and I have a problem--emissions.

The thing has 67,000 original miles, and it blew twice the legal limit of Hydrocarbons at high idle (2750, If I remember). It aslo seems to have no catalytic converter, or none that i can locate.

Since I have the body off, this would be a good time to do exhaust work. (short of bribing the test guy) should I take to try to pass emissions? I cannot drive it (legally) without registration and plates, and I cannot get those without a passed emissions...

Should I add a CC? Punch a hole in the pipe somewhere?

Help!

How about registering it outside of Bernalillo county? Wink
What did the engine come out of of? Is it EFI? Probably going to have to figure out what smog equip the engine originally because if it's that high, it sounds like something is missing. Then again, see the first sentence. Mr. Green

Clarification: At high idle (2750 rpm) the HC blew at 1087. Limit is 500.

How much will a CC kill my performance?

If the engine is blowing a whole bunch of hydrocarbons then you should either
A) Register it at a friends house or relative who lives out of your county.
B) Install a High-Flow CC that will help cut down on the HydroC.
C) Use premium octane gas and a bottle of Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) ONLY ON CARBURETOR Not to good on EFI.
D) If the engine has any sort of smog pump then make sure it is functioning. Smog pumps pump air into your exhaust system to help thin the exhaust output. Personally I hate em and think they are retarded.
In fact I think the whol emmisions thing is retarded.
None of my older cars will pass and I do the rubbing alcohol trick and it works every time.

In Bernalillo County, the cut-off date is currently 1975.
