And, as the nation's drivers deal with consistently high gasoline prices, the automaker is gearing up to offer a diesel-engine option on the redesigned Jeep Wrangler next year.

Chrysler this year has delivered nearly 8,300 Liberty diesels, which cannot be sold in California and four other states with higher emission standards than federal requirements, said Max Gates, a Chrysler spokesman.

"We are very pleased," he said. The company originally expected to sell 5,000 diesel Libertys.

Next year, meanwhile, Toledo Jeep Assembly will begin building a second diesel model for the U.S. market when the redesigned Jeep Wrangler is offered with the alternative-fuel engine, said Dan Henneman, chairman of United Auto Workers Local 12's Jeep unit.

Chrysler is considering offering diesel engines in additional U.S. models but has not announced any plans, Mr. Gates said. Diesel versions of heavy-duty Dodge Ram pickups are offered in the United States, too.

That's interesting. At Camp Jeep this past weekend I talked to a DC guy manning a booth describing the Common-Rail Diesel. He said that, although the CDL Liberty's are selling better than expected, that DC would not be selling them in the US market much longer. He said that there was consideration for a CDL powered Grand Cherokee, but no other models were under consideration. I guess it depends who you talk to.

Oh noooo shock not diesel? Mr. Green

Last year I went to an offroad meet and put my rig out in the show ring with the others. I parked my beautiful newly lifted TJ next to some old beater CJ. For the life of me I couldnt figure out why this guy always had a flock of people with thier heads in under his hood...

was he offering free lines of coke off the valve cover?

did he have a porn playing on a LCD in there?

...what?

I eventually wandered over to look myself and all he had was a little 4 banger diesel engine in there.....and he was being treated like some sort of gawd Rolling Eyes It wasnt even clean...it was a shitbox....when he started it,
It would spit, fart and stall....and he was a farking King!

So the moral of the story.....never park next to P.O.S diesel Jeeps at offroad shows Mr. Green
