I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited. Have driven over 129,000 miles. Terrific automobile -- no major problems to date. Recently I have been hearing an intermittent noise (vroom vroom) when I drive over 55 mph. Does not have any noticeable effect on driving. Can anyone advise me on the source of this noise. Many thanks. :)

if your driving over 55 mph than you have to really worry about the u joints. the only time you have to worry about the u joints is when you are turning shaprly in 4wd and you will hear a clatter and poping sound. i had that exact same problem last week my jeep was making a humming sound. most likely it is the wheel bearings.

Yup... Check your wheel bearings.. If it where a U joint (front shaft specifically ) you would feel a vibration in the floor..

i had something like that at 40 mph and it turned out to be an ovaled front output shaft bearing on the 249.

I had the same thing. Turned out to be a bad drive axle, cv axle. $89 and about an hour to swap, took care of it. Now if I could just get my heat to work...
